A Thoughtful and Inspiring Story
By Frederick A. Haddad
After viewing the film a few years ago( and it helped inspire me to enter divinity school), I finally decided to tackle the book. I would agree with the prior reviews that the book is not as "exciting" as the film, but it is a thoughtful and insightful story about one man's faith journey in remarkable circumstances in postwar China. The story is set in the Chinese countryside during the chaotic days of the Communist Revolution, when warlords still ruled vast portions of the nation and wielded great power. The protagonist, Jim Carmody, is a former pilot who escapes the service of one such warlord by assuming the identity of a dead Roman Catholic priest. Both the film and the movie raise several interesting theological issues, including sin, redemption, temptation, and divine providence.
I heartily reccomend the novel to anyone who likes adventure stories with a religious theme. If you have the opportunity, by all means engage yourself with the book and also view the film.

high praise!

This is one of my favorites. Even though it's been written in 1950, it still gets to me.
A young pilot, Carmody, crashes in the middle of China. He's rescued by a warlord (aka bandit), and forced to be his second in command. After some time the protagonist manages to escape discuised as a priest. When he arrives at a mission, where he had hoped to end the maskerade, the people address him as a priest from the very beginnning. Since he has started out acting as a cleryman, he cannot very well drop the pretence later on, and is forced to be Gods left hand. The story tells of the internal changes of the ex-bandit, ex-pilot working and living as a priest, rediscovering the believes of his childhood. And then the warlord arrives to reclaim his man ...
It's a wonderful composed story, with a high pace, tension, old fassioned adventure, but also introspection, humor, tenderness, and philosophy about the nature of man.

An excellent adventure story, even for non-believers,...
By W.Kim
William Barrett's novels focus on men whose situations force them to reavaluate their attitudes toward the idea of belief in God. As such many readers may be hesitant to pick this book up. They really shouldn't. Regardless of whether or not you believe in God or not, "The Left Hand of God", remains a great adventure story, and while the novel lacks the brief sparks of violent action of the film version (likely added by the screenwriters to "juice up" the plot), it's enriched by Barrett's description of the protagonist's internal struggle with faith and temptation.
Well written, suspenseful and intellectually satisfying, I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys adventure stories, but prefers those with a bit more depth than the usual mass market potboiler.
