Could be better, but it's all we have

Before anything else, the Slovenian Genealogy Society International must be thanked profusely for underwriting this project. An accessible English language history of this region is about 100 years overdue.
That said, there are serious problems with this book, foremost of which is the simple fact that we are dealing with two books, the original and the current translation. Not being able to read German, it's hard for me to say which problems are with the original and which are with the translation, although some are self-evident.
Herr Dimitz was a lawyer and semi-professional historian, not a writer. Upper class people, like lawyers, owed a lot of their social position to the largesse of the emperor. So when writing, they tended to be cautious in their criticism. Dimitz' caution often approaches out and out fawning.
Like most histories of these periods of time, this is not, strictly speaking, the history of Carniola, but rather the history of the Carniolan nobility and clergy (often the same men), and a history of the wars they fought. Especially the wars. Page after page after page of how many horsemen and infantry each noble supplied for each campaign. But that's what history consisted of at that time.
The German language is laden with long, complex words formed into even longer, more complex sentences. The translator (and, by inference, the editor) apparently made the decision to maintain the style and tone of the original. This often results in paragraphs consisting of a single sentence and occupying 2/3 of a page, rendering the text almost unreadable to a modern English speaker. This may have had some "scholarly" significance, but that's not the audience this book is aimed at.
The other and, in my mind, even poorer decision by the translator was to maintain personal and place names in German, rather than translate them into English, or even Slovenian. Because of this, the reader never knows where any of the events described are taking place. The names used haven't appeared on a map for almost a hundred years. Oh, yes. There are also no maps. Again, the original didn't have them, so we don't. Even though the readers of the original knew where these places were and the modern reader doesn't, unless he has a medieval gazetteer sitting on his desk.
You can skip Volume III entirely if you wish. It's not much more than a history of the Reformation and the Counter-Reformation, with all the thuggery and thinly disguised genocide that entailed.
Volume I is the best, followed by IV, II and III.
My generous 3 stars is simply because this book exists. If there was an alternative, it would drop to 2 very quickly.

This is a satisfying book for me that details the known history where my ancestors lived, so in a way it is my personal history. Reading is smooth and easy. Incredible quantity of references.
