About the Author

"Ilona Andrews" is the pseudonym for a husband-and-wife writing team. Ilona is a native-born Russian and Gordon is a former communications sergeant in the U.S. Army. Contrary to popular belief, Gordon was never an intelligence officer with a license to kill, and Ilona was never the mysterious Russian spy who seduced him. They met in college, in English Composition 101, where Ilona got a better grade. (Gordon is still sore about that.) Amazing New Series from Favorite Author

First off, I am a huge Ilona Andrews fan girl. I’ve read just about all they have published. Second, I’ve followed the progress of this book on their website and read the snippets and have been eagerly awaiting this book. I had pre-ordered this book, so I jumped at the chance to get it early.

Nevada Baylor is a small time PI strong-armed into solving a case she normally wouldn’t touch with a 10 foot pole. She is tasked with bringing in a fire mage who is accused of killing a cop. In a paranormal world just like ours, magic and family are power. Nevada has family, but is short on the magic. She does have the ability to know if someone is truthful or not. But when she is going up against a fire mage who can melt the skin off her bones, it doesn’t help her much. Her investigation draws the eye of another powerful man, Mad Rogen, who wants the fire mage for his own reasons and joins forces with Nevada.
What I liked:
1. Nevada—Weird name, but awesome girl. It amazes me how unique and different she is than any other heroine Ilona Andrews has written before. She has common sense, is pretty intelligent, is incredibly loyal, and well rounded.
2. The World Building—everything about this world made sense and was easily understood. As a bonus, there was no huge info dump trying to explain it nor was left vague and open with little clues to figure out on my own.
3. Family—Nevada’s family is hilarious, but they also felt so real! Their conversations and actions felt like real life. (You can tell the authors have a house full of teenagers.)
4. Mad Rogen—what a conundrum. I loved trying to figure out Mad. He is incredibly powerful and used to things his way. The fact he can’t seem to crack Nevada has him scratching his head. (For Ilona Fan Girls: he’s almost like Kate and Curran mixed together—yeah, that awesome.)
5. Storyline—the storyline was engaging and very interesting. It was easy to follow and clear. I felt like I was along the ride as Nevada and Mad worked through the investigation and was solving the clues along with them.
6. Realistic Romance—Even though this is being billed as a romance, this wasn’t the typical romance where we hear from the girl and then we hear from the boy and the main point of the story is their romance and everything else is secondary. Nevada and Mad Rogan meeting and actually getting to know each other is secondary to the investigation…and I liked it that way.
7. Development of powers—I loved watching the different powers people had and how they used them. Nevada may think she is small time, but oh! I really don’t think so.

What I didn’t like:
Couldn’t find anything.

Recommendation: Read it!
If you are new to Ilona Andrews, this is a great book to start. The action and mystery are nicely balanced with the romance making it an engaging read.

Not really a romance

Between the cover art and the title and the quote praising the book you would expect several graphic adult scenes. Calling it Paranormal Romance makes you think the female character is going to be obsessed with shoes or quoting Sex In The City.

Then the following lines come along:

"Is that a tank?"
"Technically that is a gun on tracks. Mobile field artillery. That's a tank in the corner. His name is Romeo."

This is not the paranormal romance you thought you were getting. (Weapons don't play that big a role; I just thought that was a good sample of the humor laced throughout the novel)

Nevada is just a small talent PI who has been supporting her family since the death of her father. The company is mortgaged to a larger firm and she is forced to take a case that will either kill her or she will fail and lose the company and family home and everything they own.

Mad Rogan is capable of knocking down a city and may be a sociopath. He is also a billionaire and a highly trained combat vet.

(Full disclosure: I own and have read everything Ilona Andrews has published, including the serial being posted to their website currently. I am amazed at the depth of their world construction and the sheer ingenuity they bring to each series.)

There are one or two sensual scenes, but not much in the way of the more usual soft-core porn.

Best of all...NO VAMPIRES!!! No werewolves or zombies. This is a bit more towards the superhuman genre than full paranormal. The one instance in which the word demon appears seems more descriptive than a reference to hellspawn.

I can hardly wait to see what they come up with next.

Steamy , action-filled mystery

I highly recommend this book if you enjoy the writing style of the Kate Daniels series. In 1863 scientists discovered a serum that brought forth latent, specific magical abilities in people and it was given to soldiers to give them an edge in fighting their enemies. They hadn't realized at the time that their offspring would also carry these abilities and stopped using the serum. Now, in today's world, families with powerful magic dominate. Other than the magic, this is the world we know with cell phones, laptops and mentions of Facebook and YouTube.

Nevada Baylor runs a family PI firm that is mortgaged to a much larger firm that has left them alone in the past. But when a very powerful fire mage kills someone while using his magic, his influential family wants him brought in before the police find him. She can't refuse, even knowing she's not capable of bringing him in, or her family would lose both the business and their home. Mad Rogan, the head of another rich and powerful house, has another reason for needing to find this guy and Nevada is his best chance of finding him.

This is nothing like the Kate series. The storyline, situations, philosophies and long term goals are vastly different. But I did recognize a couple of familiar traits between Kate/Curran and Nevada/Mad Rogan that I really enjoyed. There's a mystery, a great deal of action, and steamy sexual tension in small spurts that while important, don't overwhelm the story. Like Kate's series, the humor comes in the form of conversations, sarcastic thoughts and the sexual tension. It's listed as a romance because both are very attracted to the other, but don't expect an HEA at this point. More along the lines of the Kate series, expect a slow build up on the romance.

Unlike Magic Bites which grabbed me from the first couple of pages with its uniqueness, this did take a little more time to get in to as we learn about the different players and situations. But once it takes off, you are in for a ride.

I don't know how many books are contracted for. We are given a preview of the next book. But I can say in all honesty, I'm as anxious to read that next book as I am to get my hands on Kate's next story.

New to the writings of the wife and husband team of Ilona Andrews? There are a lot of great reasons to enjoy this story from the mystery, actions, depth in the characters, world building and a flat out well-written story.

I purchased this book to read couple chapters regarding influence diagram. After while, I found other chapters of this book are also informative. Uffe writes the book such a way that it is easy to understand harder probabilistic model's various concepts. I mention this book as reference in my research paper.

Enjoyable and useful read on bayesian network construction

I enjoyed reading the book from end to end. The author explains bayesian networks, of course, but the explanation on influence diagram makes the book quite unique in its genre. The detail on somehow less technique but not less useful on knowledge acquisition and model construction both on networks development and CPT from expert are very interesting. Cannot wait to put the model construction techniques into execution.

This is a MUST READ .

A very easy to understand and well written explanation of power factor and how to go about correcting it in the real world. Also, his chapter on using a conventional AC induction motor as a generator was most intriguing. I knew this was possible, but never had a explanation from anyone who had actually done it. Bottom line this is a MUST READ for anyone contemplating off grid and/or co-generation in the small scale (residential) type setting. Thank you, Bill.

Essential reference for DIY power systems.

If you own a generator or ever depend on anything other than GRID power, you need this reference. Understanding how power works can be the difference in a marginal at best / frustrating system, and one that functions. Chapter 1 is a great course on understanding AC power. Descriptive text with graphs and equations (if you need them) but the real meat and potatoes is understanding what goes on in a generator and it's load. Once you understand how things work - then you open up the world of experimentation and modification - and he includes critical safety information (i.e. capacitors) so you don't have to learn the hard way - something you will never see in an engineering textbook. He focuses on application theory and filters out complex equations that would bog you down and hinder understanding for non EE majors. I've never seen a better explanation of single phase induction motors as generators. Throughout the book are golden pieces of the power puzzle you will want to commit to memory.

More than just maps

The maps in this fine new historical atlas are as good or better than old standbys like The Times (or in the US, the Hammond) editions. There are some nice touches as well, such as breaking out of the standard North=Up orientation when it enables clearer portrayal of the movement of peoples or armies (for example, several pre-1900 U.S. maps are shown as if the reader is hovering over the Atlantic looking West).
The DK atlas also differentiates itself from the pack by using more timelines, photos and charts to augment the maps. I found them to be extremely well-chosen, although the mixture of of maps, images and text can make it a bit difficult to navigate through the pages at times. Finally, this new atlas is so up-to-date it includes the new Euro zone and troop movements in the Kosovo conflict.
DK's true distinction, however, is its superior treatment of Asia and Africa, both in terms of detail and in terms of a perspective that is broader than the exclusively Western view of most atlases. DK seems to be establishing a fine standard in all of their publications, and I can only hope that their competitors' next editions try to go them one better.

The most visually appealing of all the historical atlases

This is probably the most beautifully laid out and graphically designed of the big 5 or 6 atlases out there. I had a few miscellaneous comments to make, and then I thought I would compare it with the Hammond Atlas, which is the other "big gun" out there.
First, a few minor nitpicks. In the article on prehistoric man, they don't mention the age of Lucy of 3.6 million years. They do mention the species name, Australopithecus afarensis, but then although they mention the first genus homo was H. erectus in the main article, you have to read the other smaller print articles around the page to get the age figure. Also, there is no mention of ardipithecus ramidus, the oldest known pre-Homonid fossil, at 4.5 million years, or that we know of two different Australopithecines, africanus and robustus, representing a gracile versus a more robust species.
One characteristic of the DK atlas is it is more topically oriented than some of the others. In the ancient history section, for example (my main interest), it has essays on "Growth of the City," "Trade and the First Cities," and the "Earliest Writing, Counting, and Calendars."
But the biggest difference between the DK and the others is that it's divided up into two main sections--Eras of History, and the Regional Histories. The eras section contains essays such as "The World 1250-750 BCE" or "The World in 250-500 CE."
The regional history section has the histories of the main geographic areas of the world, such as Europe, West Asia, North Asia, East Asia, Africa, South America, Australasia, North America, and so on. Within those sections you'll find specific articles such as "Europe After the Fall of Rome," or "Early Empires of West Asia, or "North America, 1865-1920."
The DK atlas has 470 maps, 420 timelines, over 1000 photos, and a 20,000 entry index/gazetteer which is much more than an index since the entries include capsule biographies and histories of important events--a unique feature of all the atlases, and similarly there is a subject/index glossary that does the same thing.
The Hammond atlas is the other major offering in this area. Compared to the DK, the Hammond reads more like a typical history book, with articles that go on for several parallel columns of unequal depth and accompanied by maps and various illustrations. The DK text is much more broken up into smaller paragraphs with different sizes of type, often relating to a photo or smaller map or other graphic. Although visually more striking than the Hammond, its approach is more disjointed as a result and I think harder to use and learn from. The articles also are somewhat more superficial as a result compared to the the competing atlases, especially the Atlas of World History by John Haywood and the Hammond and Oxford historical atlases.
The DK has nicer, glossier paper than the others, which makes their maps and photos more attractive. Also the map colors of the DK are aften more pastel-like, whereas the Hammond often uses the traditional four-color map color scheme with bright red, green, blue, and yellow, which, after the DK, is a little garish and hard on eye, although they also have many maps with more subtle color schemes, so it's not a hard-and-fast distinction.
One other nice feature of the Hammond is that it has a separate timeline at the beginning of book of 11 pages.
Finally, the Hammond atlas is 373 pages and the DK is 352, including indexes, so they're pretty close in terms of length, and their overall dimensions are almost the same, so they're pretty equivalent there.
Finally, one major advantage of the DK atlas, however, is that it has the most coverage of all the other areas of the world, besides Europe. The others are all more Eurocentric.
The bottom line is I would say the Hammond atlas is the more informative and scholarly of the two, but the DK is more fun just to browse and page through. Depending on what you're looking for and how you like to use them, you might prefer one over the other.
One last thing I'd like to mention is that the John Haywood atlas, although not as large and as comprehensive as the Hammond and DK, is also well worth considering. It's also excellent and only a fraction of the price of these two big volumes, and I think it does the best job of integrating the text with the maps and graphics.

About the Author
Born on December 15th, 1865,Sir John Woodroffe graduated in jurisprudence and the Bachelor of Civil Law examinations at Oxford/U.K.. In 1890, He moved to India and enrolled as an advocate in Calcutta High Court. He was soon made a Fellow of the Calcutta University and appointed Law Professor there.He was appointed Standing Counsel to the Government of India in 1902 and two years later was raised to the High Court Bench.After serving for eighteen years in the bench, he became Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court in 1915.After retiring to England he became Reader in Indian Law at the University of Oxford, and finally moved to France in his retirement, where he died in 1936. Alongside his judicial duties he studied Sanskrit and Hindu philosophy and was especially interested in the esoteric Hindu Tantric Shakti system. He translated some twenty original Sanskrit texts, and under his pseudonym Arthur Avalon.He published and lectured prolifically and authoritatively on Indian philosophy and a wide range of Yoga and Tantra topics. His most popular and influential book, a major contribution to the appreciation of Indian philosophy and spirituality, is The Serpent Power The Secrets of Tantric and Shaktic Yoga (a best seller at amazon.com),which is the source of many modern Western appropriations of Kundalini practice. An interesting read

I came to this book through my work with yoga. Woodroffe makes an interesting essay which blends western science with the ancient veda philosophies. Not an easy read, but an insightful study of some ancient truths.
