Great Book! Provides techniques to talk to different kinds of patients.

It is much easier to learn the Krebs cycle than learning how to talk to patients.

This book is a great reference. It helps you structure your approach to different kinds of patient. From the ones, you think, are "great and compliant" patients but you cannot seem to get his/her blood pressure or blood sugars under control; to the ones you want to run away from whenever you see them on your schedule.
The book provides core principles on the the usual clinical scenarios, from obtaining a good history & physical, to providing a diagnosis, to discussing treatment options and following up on the treatment plans.

It also provides very difficult clinical scenarios, like dealing with an angry patient or giving a bad diagnosis, and even giving bad news to a family member.

You can easily master Bates' ;-) Learning how to understand and approach people in real life, clinical situations is not easy. The book provides basic knowledge, concrete tools/techniques to communicate with patients effectively.

Widely applicable, highly successful, broadly used teaching model

The three function model is a profound bedrock to provide footing for a medical communication course. It is simple at its most basic level and applicable to any discipline or subspecialty a young trainee would decide to pursue. Thus, it is widely applicable to medical school educators. At the same time, one can go into each of the three functions of a medical encounter as deeply as desired or as is necessary. This makes the model equally applicable to graduate and post graduate level educators and clinicians who want to advance their skills. As time is so precious in every patient interaction, so is the need to master the broad skills that can help us maximize our relationship with the patient, the elucidation of the issue at hand and the personalized approach that can educate, motivate, align the patient and family with the physician.

I have used this book to both advance my learning and my teaching of medical communication skills. The book serves as the basis for the four-year curriculum I co-direct in Interpersonal and Communication Skills at the Hofstra North Shore LIJ School of Medicine. Of note, the first graduating class of this medical school, while in their second year - a year highlighted by basic and clinical science - took a vote on the most influential concept they learned during their first two years of medical school. They decided that it was 'Function One - Build the Relationship with the Patient and Family.' There are few medical texts out there that can have such wide appeal and effectiveness.

I would wholeheartedly recommend this book to any medical educator who has a need to both learn and teach patient-physician communication.

About the Author

This book took me back to a simpler time in America when I was growing up and learned to sew like most American girls, but these lessons skipped a generation and now very few know how to create their own garments and accessories for personal wear or for their homes. But this is not a lost art in most other countries. This book is a terrific guide for anyone who wishes to learn or to teach their children how to sew and have the rewards of creating and the pride of finishing something themselves. The projects in the book are pictured with very simple to understand and complete instructions and many patterns are included, which can be adapted to all sizes and to create many items. This book gives good know-how and experience for anyone from first stitches to creating personalized projects for very nice and practical gifts. The book would be an excellent home-school text also. I love it!

Love It!

I LOVE this book! She is wonderful at explaining sewing terms and processes. The projects range from Beginner-Easy Peasy (1 star) to Improvers-More Tricky (4 stars) from a cushion cover to a customized dress. These are all projects that I would enjoy making, which is not always the case with sewing books like this. The beginners section even has an easy quilt and a mini-bow belt! So happy with this purchase, I would highly recommend it!

Instructions are really easy to understand

At first I was disappointed with this cause it was aimed at beginners, but then I had to put a zipper in a dress, something I should have learned years ago, but realized I've been avoiding zippers with a passion because the ones I tried so long ago didn't go well. I turned to the zipper section and followed every step religiously, even though some of them seemed like they were overkill (that's how I screw up most of the time, taking short cuts), and do you know? I put in the perfect zipper. It looks amazing. I then thought I should send Lauren a thank you note. Ha ha. I love the "Have it your way" dress and now that I've got past the "I sew too well to use this book" thing, I appreciate the amazingly clear instructions. I am a self taught sewer, and didn't realize that I was kinda lacking in some of the basics (like zippers), but now I have no fear. I think if you are really experienced, you won't find much here. But then, it is named LEARN TO SEW with Lauren, isn't it? I loved her on the Great British Sewing Bee, it's why I bought the book! And when I read the text, I hear it in her voice. When I can find the frame, I am going to try the snap frame purse.

I just bought platinum edition of Perry's for $159, whichincludes both the book and this CD, a much better deal than paying$119 for the CD only. As for the quality of the CD, there are some things to like and some to hate about it. Since it's in Adobe Acrobat format, it's easy to print off a few pages, but it's fuzzy if you don't have a good laser-jet printer. You can't resize the font as you can in MSword or Wordperfect. Because of the 2-column layout of Perry's, it is very tedious trying to read a page from your screen using Acrobat, unless you happen to have 20/20 vision and a 21+-inch monitor. As far as the portability of the data goes, it's easy to copy (CTRL+C) and paste from the "active objects" which only cover part of all the data, but very messy to copy directly from Adobe Acrobat. My advice is if you want this CD, then go ahead and spend the extra $40 and get the 3000 page book as well.

The indispensable reference for engineers and scientists.

Perry's Handbook has been found indispensable by chemical engineers, and a wide variety of other engineers and scientists, through six previous editions spanning more than sixty years. The NST/Engineers, Inc. reviewer, a Ph.D., PE favors the hardbound book as a desk reference, whereas he favors the CD format (ISBN# 0071344128) where a laptop or copying text or calculations are required. Users familiar with previous editions of Perry's will find additional text sections, tables, and figures. The reviewer did not detect deletions of any required material.
You will notice the increased use of SI units. Section 1, of thirty Handbook sections, "Conversion Factors and Mathematical Symbols", provides a rescue line for those of us much more accustomed to U.S., British, and older Metric units and who are not fully conversant with S.I. units. The first one-third of the Handbook lays the theoretical groundwork for a fuller understanding of its final two-thirds.
Section 2 provides physical properties data, including tables of constants for properties' correlations covering wide temperature ranges. Methods for the prediction and correlation of physical properties are explained. Section 3 summarizes mathematics through differential equations and statistics. Sections 4 through 7 may be considered short texts on "Thermodynamics", "Heat and Mass Transfer", "Fluid and Particle Dynamics", and "Reaction Kinetics".
In its eighty-four double column text pages, Section 8 covers the "Fundamentals of Process Dynamics and Control". It includes model predictive control, process optimization, unit operations control, process measurements, and concludes with controllers, final control elements, and regulators. Section 9, "Process Economics", takes the reader through calculations involved in investment and profitability decisions, cost control, and cost estimation. Starting with Section 10, "Transport and Storage of Fluids", and for most of the following twenty sections, the chemical engineering unit operations, details of more specialized theories and operating practices, calculation methods, interface studies between chemical engineering and other disciplines (i.e., Biochemical Engineering and Waste Management), and data specific to the topic being presented are given.
As previously stated, these latter sections, about two-thirds of the book, build upon an understanding of the fundamentals presented earlier. For example, Section 10; Section 11, "Heat Transfer Equipment"; Section 12, "Psychrometry, Evaporative Cooling, and Solids Drying"; Section 13, "Distillation"; Section 14, "Gas Absorption"; Section 15, "Liquid-Liquid Extraction"; Section 16, "Adsorption and Ion Exchange"; Section 17, "Gas-Solid Operations and Equipment"; and Section 18, "Liquid-Solid Operations and Equipment"; build on an understanding of Section 4, "Thermodynamics", Section 5, "Heat and Mass Transfer", and Section 6 "Fluid and Particle Dynamics". However, the book sections are all prepared to be rather self-sufficient so that readers without the earlier fundamental background can still gather useful working information.
The final twelve sections complete the review of unit operations and add important interdisciplinary studies. The sections are: "Solid-Solid Operations and Equipment"; "Size Reduction and Size Enlargement"; "Handling of Bulk Solids and Packaging of Solids and Liquids"; "Alternative Separation Processes"; "Chemical Reactors" (building on Section 7 "Reaction Kinetics"); "Biochemical Engineering"; "Waste Management"; "Process Safety"; "Energy resources, Conversion, and Utilization"; "Materials of Construction"; "Process Machinery Drives"; and "Analysis of Plant Performance";
Actually, a reasonable understanding of the contents of Perry's, including how to find and use the voluminous data, is equivalent to the text-based learning at the completion of a Master's degree in chemical engineering.

What's all the fuss?

Perry's has been gathering dust on my bookshelf at home for years. I always think of it as the book to go to if you want to NOT find the answer to something. In my 20 year career and in my PE test effort, the only thing I ever used it for was to look up properties of substances. It is NOT friendly to the working engineer, since it quickly veers into arcane academic territory on every subject, or else is too general to be useful. This is a serious review of this book by a ChE PE, but I know this review will get panned by all, not because it is not useful, but because you do not agree with it.

About the Author
Somnath Batabyal worked for a decade in journalism, covering crime and criminality, hobnobbing with politicians and policemen, before entering the quieter world of Western academia. His first book, Making News in India: Star News and Star Ananda, was published in 2011. He has also edited a volume, Indian Mass Media and the Politics of Change (2010). Somnath now lives in London where he teaches at the School of Oriental and African Studies. The Price You Pay is his first novel.

racing story of cops and robbers and journalists set in Delhi

[Full disclosure: Somnath is a friend]

The Price You Pay is Somnath Batabyal's first novel, a racing story of cops and robbers and journalists set in Delhi. It never lets up for a second, and despite the confusingly huge array of characters, I was enrapt the entire book. This was mainly due to the strong characters - not often found in books about the press and police.

Our novice journalist and hero, Abhishek, is smart enough to keep just barely ahead of the game, and naive enough to let the reader be him through all the twists and turns. It does feel like everything and the kitchen sink gets thown at him (his career is a shooting star), and if it's a Delhi sink, then you might guess how twisted and graphic that might be.

The city is another fabulous character in the book, and I felt I got a real sense of the ins and outs of the bureaucracy and bravery that's required to survive that mad place. Highly recommended if you feel like a super fun fast gritty blow through contemporary Delhi.

Hi guys,
This is a super rad guide to Tel Aviv city. I lived in this city for many years and this new edition basically covers ALL important and cool aspects of this fantastic city. Tel Aviv is definitely a unique city that you must explore further more than the confines of your sweet hotel's swimming pool and adjacent piece of beach! It has so many things to offer you and even after three weeks of wandering you can still definitely discover more and more - so do it! (not for vain people fall in love with this place). What I like about this guide is that it digs the streets, it digs the atmosphere and vibes, and the actual culture of this city. I bought it as a gift to a dear Brooklyn friend of mine that headed to Israel as part of her birth-right trip (with extension right after), with the promise that she can't go wrong. What so cool about this guide is that it avoids all dull tourist traps and points exactly towards all brilliant places that local Tel-Avivians would choose to go to. I couldn't join her unfortunately, but was super happy to find this guide on time and after reading through it I felt like this was the exact one that I hoped for. Needless to say my friend found this guide to be awesome and very useful. She end up giving it away to another tourist she met! :-)

Useful, up to date and perfect for budget travelers

I host couchsurfers in Tel Aviv but I’m not always available to be a tourist guide for them. I have a map people can use when they stay with me and for the past few years I’ve also been keeping a version of this guide handy. It’s perfect for backpackers and budget travelers, so a good fit for my guests. This new edition has some of my favorite places listed in it and I even found a few places that were new to me. Because it updates every year, it can afford to list places that are likely to only exist a short time, like pop up bars etc. so is a good reflection of Tel Aviv culture.

Shimrit has a way of safely guiding us to what should be an excellent time in Tel Aviv. I received a copy of this well written guide from a friend and I can't wait to check out Tel Aviv. I've always thought of this city as just another place in the Middle East that is hot and full of judgemental and dangerous people. Ya, I've been suffering from a bit of prejudice and bigotry... After checking out this guide however I feel like I can meet people on the other side of the world that have many common interests with me and other secular hippie types ;)

This Book Is Amazing

I picked up Exploring Auras and could not put it down. There is no other book with this information anywhere. This book has everything any healing practitioner would need for their clients to heal and cleanse their energy field. Shumsky has obviously experienced all the anomalies in the auric field first-hand and has found easy, universal, repeatable ways to heal them. I highly recommend this book to help any psychic sponge or overly sensitive person to take control of their life. And to help any person who is plagued with problems originating in their own mind or in the environment. With this book anyone can heal the mind, body, and environment by working with the human energy field. I love the illustrations. They helped me understand many of my own experiences and those of my clients. I also loved Shumsky's other books, Exploring Chakras, Exploring Meditation, and Divine Revelation.

This is probably Susan G. Shumsky's best book yet. It teaches dozens of incredibly effective healing affirmations and other techniques for cleansing the human energy field, as well as the mind, emotions, and environment. These methods are extremely effective, and results are instantaneous. Anyone who has trouble picking up undesirable energy from the environment will greatly benefit from this book. Also, the book teaches how to measure the energy field and how to increase its energy. As a person troubled with energy vampires, this book has been a Godsend for me, and I know it will also benefit you.

This book provides a thorough analysis of the Common Reporting Standard and is essential reading for those interested in, or affected by, the development of Automatic Exchange of Information and the death of banking secrecy - including legal, tax and finance professionals, as well as their clients. The book is an excellent reference tool since separate chapters consider the CRS from the perspective of alternative stakeholders, including individuals, companies, partnerships, trusts and foundations. This really is a fantastic textbook, whether you're studying AP English Language and Composition, or simply trying to improve your own writing and discussion. The first portion of the book is a textbook discussing rhetorical strategies. It helps develop better, more thoughtful readers and writers. The rest of the book (2/3+) is devoted to essays loosely grouped by subject. Some are "classic" essays (from the 18th and 19th centuries) and others are more contemporary pieces (from the 20th and 21st centuries). Each includes questions meant to prompt discussion and reflection, particularly with regards to stylistic and rhetorical choices. There are also groups of essays, charts of data, and visuals that can be used to work on synthesis essays...

The text is well-organized, engaging, and appropriately succinct. The essays included are well-written and represent a pleasing diversity of voices.
