Cute with one (adult) sour note

This is a sweet and cute story. It's a non-religious depiction of Christmas, complete with Santa, reindeer and elves. Every one is kind and caring - the only emphasis on gifts is that the broken toy is for Donny (Doc's little brother) and how he really wants it and has done so many kind things. The book is a paperback printed on high-quality paper and is holding up really well to multiple readings a night. In October. Save me. ;)

***Adult crap here: My only problem, and it's an adult problem so I won't even knock off a star for it, with the book is that [SPOILER] in the end the elf gets a promotion because of the efforts of the toys and Doc McStuffins, not because of his own efforts. He basically cried, the toys and Doc helped him, and then got rewarded for his dedication. *sigh* I suspect the tv episode gives him more perseverance and fortitude... but the book has him rewarded for very little. End adult crap***

A Very Nice Christmas Story

This story is perfect for a young child who enjoys the Doc McStuffins stories and TV series. The story is a nice Christmas story about helping to make sure Doc's brother, Danny, has the best Christmas ever. The gift he wanted most arrives by elf ,of course ,but is broken. Doc and her friends must head to Santa's workshop to fix the toy and just in time for Christmas too. The book includes 2 pages of stickers for your child to use.

Getting Over It and Getting Back to You

30 Days to Getting Over the Dork You Used to Call Your Boyfriend by Clea Hantman was surprisingly cute, clean, and uplifting. The book is split up into five sections, one for each stage of grief (denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance), with specific activities and reading for each day.

It's easy to say, "Stop moping and move on," but harder to do. Throughout the book, readers are encouraged to get up off of the couch and dance, to reconnect with friends and with themselves. They are never told to be vengeful or rude. It's less about the ex and more about you. It does not inspire selfishness nor grudges, but rather, self-confidence and optimism.

My favorite section is Day Seventeen: Give a Little Bit, which begins on page 85. This chapter is all about giving back. "There are a zillion ways for you to volunteer. The trick is finding one that's right for you." "For example, you may not teach children how to read, but you can help those children." If you want to donate your time to a worthy organization or cause but don't know where to start, this chapter provides some great ideas, such as hosting or participating in walk-a-thon, volunteering, and donating your old clothes.

30 Days is rife with cool pick-me-up ideas, activities, and surveys. The book even closes with lists of celebrities who have been dumped or have dumped others. The point is this happens to everyone, and you'll be okay. With quirky writing, personal anecdotes from the author, and a song at the end of every chapter, this book is sure to make teens laugh out loud. Laughter is the best medicine, after all, and what a great way to start healing.

A breakup can seem like the end of the world to a teenage girl. Clea Hantman, author of the new book 30 DAYS TO GETTING OVER THE DORK YOU USED TO CALL YOUR BOYFRIEND, realizes this and treats her readers with sensitivity. But along with offering some advice and perspective, Hantman also offers a lot of fun.

When you're mourning the loss of a relationship, she writes, you go through the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. The book is divided into parts based on these five stages, and for each of the thirty days, she offers an activity.

At first these activities include things like putting all reminders of "the dork" in a box and writing down all the things that were wrong with him, but eventually they move on to things like exercising, volunteering, even feng shui. Every day also has a song that's relevant to that day's activity and is, usually, pretty cool. (I made some additions to my iTunes after reading this book!)

The book is also sprinkled with pop culture references that teenagers can relate to and concludes with the lists, "Girls Who Have Dumped with Aplomb," "Girls Who Have Been More Famously Dumped Than You (And Lived to Tell!)," "Movies About Being Dumped," "More Break-Up Songs," and "Books About the Ups, Downs, and In-Betweens of Relationships."

I don't know how effective this book would be for getting over a serious relationship that lasted for years, but I think it provides a lot of guidance and sympathy for most teenage girls dealing with breakups. For everyone else it will, at the very least, provide a smile.

Mr. Aliko Dangote is an inspiration not only to Africans but to the world. I am not referring to his billion of $, but the businesses that form part of Dangote Group. His businesses cater for basic human needs i.e. cement for shelter, textile for clothing, flour, sugar, fish for food. He is now moving to oil refining and by-products .

About the Author
Mr. Anthony J. Bertino has taught biology for more than thirty-nine years, having a special interest in forensics. Since 1975, he has had a wide range of teaching and professional experiences related to science education. He taught at Canandaigua Academy (in New York) for thirty-four years before retiring in 2001. Currently a clinical supervisor responsible for supervising student teachers with the University of Albany Graduate School of Education in New York, Mr. Bertino also teaches AP Biology at College Board Summer Institutes. He has received many awards and honors. He has written articles for THE SCIENCE TEACHER and has created many activities related to crime scene investigation. Bertino teaches Forensic Science teacher preparation seminars, AP Summer Institutes, and is a frequent national and state workshop presenter. His professional affiliations have included NABT, NSTA, Director of the Outstanding Biology Teachers Award for New York State, STANYS, CTA, NYSUT, NEA, United University Professors, Rochester Alliance Promoting Science, and the New York State Regional Biology mentor network.

Patricia Nolan Bertino received a BA in Biology Secondary Science from Oneonta State College in 1972 and a MS in Science Education from Union College in 1977. Patricia taught high school biology, health, biotechnology and forensic science and was the ski club coordinator/ advisor at Scotia-Glenville High School, Scotia, NY. After thirty four years in the classroom, Patricia and her husband Anthony (Bud) Bertino co-authored Forensic Science: Fundamentals and Investigations (2008) textbook for high school students. Patricia and her husband remain very active in teacher education through presentations at many national and state science teachers' conferences. For the past ten years, they have organized and taught the Bertino Summer Forensic Institute for Teachers. In addition to teaching high school, Patricia's experience includes: Editor AP Biology CDs ( NeoSci ) and Biology Review Book The Living Environment; Presenter for Howard Hughes Medical Institute from 1995-2013; Developer for curriculum on immunology and HIV for CIBT (Cornell Institute for Biology Teachers); Co-taught AP Biology summer institutes with Anthony Bertino; Subject area representative in biology for Science Teachers Association in New York State (STANYS) for the Eastern Division; Publications include articles in The Forensic Teacher and STANYS Bulletin; Professional affiliations with NABT, NSTA,STANYS, CIBT, NYSUT, NEA; Past honors and distinctions include recipient of NABT (National Association of Biology Teachers) Outstanding NABT Teacher Award for New York State and a Tandy Scholarship.

Enjoy meeting the accident prone Amelia!

It is 1803 in Suffolk, England. 11 year old Amelia is living with Lord Stafford when she gets the news that he is "shipping" her off to London to be taught by a governess. We then fast forward nine years to 1812 where we find Amelia helping her servant friend Emma out by dusting the library. Alas she falls/slips off the ladder and ends up in the arms of a handsome, well dressed stranger! Who is he? Only the notorious Lord Raebourne Rake, monster of the house, otherwise known as Anthony Pendleton, Marquis of Raebourne.

Anthony has been absent from London for two years but can he shed his previous reputation? Now a new creation, trying to live life as a Christian he has a hard time getting Amelia out of his thoughts. Anthony is fascinated by Amelia. She is truly an enigma to him. Does she really know all his servants by name not to mention her own and many others? Amelia is going to be 21 in a few months and has no idea what the future holds for her as it appears that Lord Stafford has forgotten she even exists! Due to an unusual turn of events, Amelia finds herself invited to dinner at Lady Miranda's. An amusing scene! This meal starts up a great friendship between Miranda and Amelia and of course Anthony is never far behind.

When a solicitor turns up at the door just one day before Amelia's first ever ball, is he bringing good or bad news? How does everything turn out? Why does Anthony later call himself a "corn-brained idiot"?

It takes talent to write humor into a story like this without it being corny. This author has done an EXCELLENT job! Found myself smiling/laughing several times. LOVED it! This is a Christian book based on Christian principles so please bear that in mind before purchasing so you will not be disappointed. At the end of the book we are treated to a preview of the next in the series which is Miranda's story.

I received this book for free and I thought I would give it a try. It was entertaining at times with some funny moments but I think I needed more from the story.

The writing was simple, easy to follow, there was nothing difficult about it. I would have liked to have more descriptions of the all the characters. The conversations that each character had with one another wasn't in depth or showed real emotion. They were straight forward with a "this is how I feel" to the sentences. The characters weren't complex and they didn't challenge me as a reader. The characters weren't appealing and I wasn't drawn to any of them. If you're a reader that wants a VERY simple clean romance , you will like this story.

Be esteemed with Lady of Esteem

"A Lady of Esteem" by Kristi Ann Hunter is the novella prequel to "A Noble Masquerade", also from Bethany House. Even though it is a prequel, both novels can be read on its own, but be warned. You'll enjoy either one so much, you'll want to read about the other characters in either of these novels. That's just what happened to me! Since reading "A Noble Masquerade", I was quite impressed and enjoyed it so much, I had to check out Ms. Hunter's other works. "A Lady of Esteem" is her first series novella, and "A Noble Masquerade" is her first full novel. Enough about the background, let's talk about the book itself.

Since I'm reading backwards, being first reading "A Noble Masquerade", I already know a little about the characters, and Amelia is one of those that you find intriguing throughout. Not to mention, all the other characters also shone in their own light. There's Miranda, Griffith, Georgina and my favorite Trent. Their personalities continued or were cohesive in both novels, which is always appreciated. There are some series, because of who the focus is in that particular book, the characters' personalities does not tie in well with the other books of the series. I'm glad this one stayed the same or at least connects. Trent is one character I'm so glad is still the same funny and charming man as ever.

Amelia Stalwood is one lady you'll come to respect. Yes, she was a slight mystery in "A Noble Masquerade" and having read "A Lady of Esteem", I understand what that combined "respect" you feel when she's in the pages of either novel. Her demeanor and way of thinking, and her sense of equality with everyone, no matter their stage or class in life gives way to a lady anyone will esteem. For who she is, will radiate and rub off on all those around her, even if it's a snooty gentleman of the higher social class.

"A Lady of Esteem" is everything I said about "A Noble Masquerade" - it has plot, it has romance, it has humor (not as much, but still there), it has lovable and interesting characters, and it has a message. Learn from Amelia or just enjoy a good short read. (It's currently free on Amazon.)

Fantastic book! I've been a wellness practitioner and alternative ...

Fantastic book! I've been a wellness practitioner and alternative health researcher for over 13 years. This book is thorough yet easy-to-understand, and the author pulls a lot of information together that validates some of my own personal research, but conveys it clear for the layman yet comprehensive for the medical researcher. I'm not quite finished reading it but have already adopted key components of the programme and am experiencing what seems to be miraculous results! It's a bit early to say too much but I plan to circle back on this Review after I've had more time on this programme. But so far so GREAT!

whatever you would like to call it

Roy Baumeister's Willpower was an enjoyable book, and fascinating for what it says about us as human beings. The most fascinating point is this. Willpower, self-control, free-will, whatever you would like to call it, is a relative capacity, and it is more or less controlled by certain features of our physiology, and it is particularly tied to glucose. Think of glucose in the body as the fuel that lets you run, or gives you self-control or free will. When this fuel gets burned up through the activities you engage in throughout your day, your level of self-control decreases. You make bad or hasty decisions, you get angry at a loved one, you don't do something as well as you should have, etc. And it's all because you are burning up the fuel that powers your body. The book is very good and practical about what to do to avoid your depletion of self-control, and it involves getting a reasonable amount of sleep and eating well throughout your day. 'Well' in 'eating well' is the operative word, by the way, because what gives your body a good dose of glucose that will serve your body best is healthy food that contains sugars but that does not just give your body a quick dose of sugar. Things like energy drinks, for instance, can increase your glucose levels, but they also cause a big crash because these are the kinds of sugars that burn quickly. Slow-burning sugars are the ticket. The book also gives other practical advice about kinds of exercises you can do throughout your day to increase your willpower. Perhaps it's a truism, but one easy way is setting clear goals, sticking with a standard to meet those goals, and rewarding yourself for the big and little goals met proportionate to the size of the goals are all ways you can maintain adequate levels of self-control and not use too much energy worrying or involved in trivial matters. Pretty good book.

One of the very most important books I have ever read

Do yourself a favor; read the reviews that amazon, in its wisdom, has designated "the most helpful favorable review" and "the most helpful critical review." The latter makes a huge case about books written by researchers versus books written by professional writers. I have read a bunch of books about science. I love science. I think professional writers -- and there are tons of them these days -- have contributed more to the understanding of science than scientists (and that's bad news as well as good).

But John Tierney's writing is clear, concise, and very understandable. Now go and read the five-star amazon reviews by brilliant people who express themselves well.

This explains a lot....

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As someone who is constantly striving to improve my willpower and self-discipline, I read this book with keen interest. However, this book gave me the most unexpected insight - why I hate shopping SO much! I avoid it, I procrastinate, I just go without even if I am perfectly able to afford the item I need.

Whenever I go to the mall I feel absolutely drained and miserable, while my bargain hunting mother and sister absolutely thrive off it. Here's the reason - making decisions about what items to buy requires will power and drains energy! It's something called decision fatigue.

The author presents a disturbing case study in which parole judges would be multiple times more likely to grant parole for prisoners they reviewed earlier in the day than later in the day. By the end of the day they were too tired to go through all the effort to review the info and make a good decision so they just erred on the side of caution!

The overall message of the book is that we have a finite store of daily willpower. We use that same store for everything that requires will power, from going to the gym to finishing a difficult report. Willpower requires energy, specifically glucose, which is why it is important to refuel a bit before attempting something difficult. On a positive note, willpower can be strengthened and expanded with practice. Small successes build our confidence and ultimately our willpower - a concept known as self-efficacy.

However, If you are trying to make lifestyle changes you have a greater chance of success by attempting one thing at a time. This approach allows you to concentrate our willpower on a new activity until it becomes habit and no longer requires much willpower.

Bottom line - it's a really fun read and you might learn a few things about yourself along the way.

This edition has updated virtually every chapter to remain current with contemporary clinical laboratory science. Obviously a book this broadly focused cannot go into the level of detail of standard laboratory medicine textbooks, and this one hits the right tone and level of detail for students or practitioners early in their career.

This is a great companion book to accompany didactic or practical training of medical laboratory scientist training programs. It is very useful for anyone wanting a broad and basic understanding of clinical laboratory science.

Redundant at times, but overall a solid text.

I've only read through chapter 1 so far, but I just have to say that Turgeon goes overboard on redundant information. I always practically rewrite my required texts in the form of notes, and this usually entails picking out key points and allowing the context of each point to brew as I read. This time around it has entailed eliminating reiterated key points from my working notes and reorganizing the way the information has been presented. I feel as if the information could have been presented with more brevity with a more logical flow.

UPDATE: I have to increase my original rating by 1 star. While the first chapter did come across as jumbled as it attempted to introduce readers to the many organizations that overlook lab safety, quality control, quality assurance, and professionalism, this is not representative of later chapters which get more into theory and lab techniques. Overall, I am satisfied with what I have learned later in my course using this text.

This book really need an editor's pen

I have found so many typo's, mislabeling of figures, and--once--incorrect information (description of the chloride shift backwards). This textbook has taken on a difficult job, trying to describe the background and procedures to a myriad of lab procedures. It would be good if it had an editor correct all the mistakes.
