About the Author
Maxine Baca Zinn is professor emerita in the Department of Sociology at Michigan State University. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Oregon. Her books include: Women of Color in U.S. Society (with Bonnie Thornton Dill) and Gender Through the Prism of Difference (with Pierrette Hondagneu-Sotelo and Michael Messner). She is the coauthor (with D. Stanley Eitzen) of Social Problems and Diversity in Families–both of which won McGuffey Awards for excellence over multiple editions from the Text and Academic Authors Association–and Globalization: The Transformation of Social Worlds. She has served as president of the Western Social Science Association. In 2000, she received the American Sociological Association's Jessie Bernard Award for expanding the horizons of sociology to include the study of women.

D. Stanley Eitzen is professor emeritus in sociology from Colorado State University, where previously he was the John N. Stern Distinguished Professor. He recieved his Ph.D. from the University of Kansas. Among his books are Social Problems, which was awarded the McGuffey Longevity Award for excellence over multiple editions in 2000 by the Text and Academic Authors Association, and Diversity in Families (both co-authored with Maxine Baca Zinn); Solutions to Social Problems: Lessons from Other Societies (with Graig S. Leeham); Paths to Homelessness: Extreme Poverty and the Urban Housing Crisis (with Doug A. Timmer and Kathryn Talley); Sociology of North American Sport (with George H. Sage); and Fair and Foul: Rethinking the Myths and Paradoxes of Sport. He has served as the president of the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport and as editor of The Social Science Journal.

Barbara Wells is associate professor of sociology at Maryville College, where she is also chair of the Division of Social Sciences. She received her Ph.D. from Michigan State University. She is co-author of Diversity in Families (with Maxine Baca Zinn and D. Stanley Eitzen). Her research and publishing has centered on marriage, rural families, structural transformation and family life, and Latino families. She is presently working on a book manuscript on the work and family lives of Mexican American women who are daughters and granddaughters of immigrant farm workers.

Okay Beginner Level Book

If you are relatively new to PhotoShop and are looking for a quick, relatively easy intro to B&W photo restoration, this isn't a bad little book. I wanted to love it, but I can't.

Pros: Deals with the basic tools and walks you through the process of using them to fix some problems. Easy to refer to the examples and apply to your scans. Short and easy to use. Inexpensive.
Cons: The printing is on uncoated paper so the example photos aren't always clear. The writing is sub par. No editing was done. The instructions were a little muddled in a couple of the examples. Doesn't address facial restoration if there is a lot of damage. One of his examples shows a family photo, with a big area of damage and he completely ignores how to repair that. Instead he focuses on blurring the background. It cries for information about how he repaired the faces and clothing of the damaged people, but he says not a word except that it will require a lot of work. (See photo of page from book.)

As a quick intro to see if you want to take on the task of repairing family heirlooms, this is a decent place to start. You won't be overwhelmed by all of the tools and choices PhotoShop provides. It's a painless beginning.

I recommend: Photo Restoration—From Snapshots to Great Shots by Robert Correll as the next step to increasing your skills.
Well written (even funny in places), easy to follow, addresses color as well as B&W. Yet not intimidating or overwhelming if you follow along the steps and examples of what he did to repair & improve the photos.

The Bible of photo restoration is: CTEIN's Digital Restoration From Start to Finish. Though it's getting a bit dated. It's an excellent advanced book.

Born into a world of racial hierarchy, Melville J. Herskovits (1895–1963) employed physical anthropology and ethnography to undermine racist and hierarchical ways of thinking about humanity and to underscore the value of cultural diversity. His research in West Africa, the West Indies, and South America documented the far-reaching influence of African cultures in the Americas. He founded the first major interdisciplinary American program in African studies in 1948 at Northwestern University, and his controversial classic The Myth of the Negro Past delineated African cultural influences on American blacks and showcased the vibrancy of African American culture. He also helped forge the concept of cultural relativism, particularly in his book Man and His Works. While Herskovits promoted African and African American studies, he criticized some activist black scholars, most notably Carter G. Woodson and W. E. B. Melville J. Herskovits and the Racial Politics of Knowledge is the first full-scale biography of the trailblazing anthropologist of African and African American cultures. Born into a world of racial hierarchy, Melville J. Herskovits (1895–1963) employed physical anthropology and ethnography to undermine racist and hierarchical ways of thinking about humanity and to underscore the value of cultural diversity. His research in West Africa, the West Indies, and South America documented the far-reaching influence of African cultures in the Americas. He founded the first major interdisciplinary American program in African studies in 1948 at Northwestern University, and his controversial classic The Myth of the Negro Past delineated African cultural influences on American blacks and showcased the vibrancy of African American culture. He also helped forge the concept of cultural relativism, particularly in his book Man and His Works. While Herskovits promoted African and! African American studies, he criticized some activist black scholars, most notably Carter G. Woodson and W. E. B. Every anthropologists knows who Mellvile J. Herskovits is- -right? When one lists Franz Boas' most influential students, he is the one sandwiched somewhere between Kroeber, Lowie, Benedict and Mead. Herskovits founded the anthropology department at Northwestern, helped to organize the African Studies Association (ASA), and conducted ethnographic research in Suriname to document African survivals in the New World. Oh, yeah, didn't he have a wife that helped him conduct fieldwork among the Maroons? For the majority of anthropologists, this is the biographic outline that comes to mind. Historian Jerry Gershenhorn's brilliant new book simply explodes this flat and uninformed sketch by offering a detailed and textured portrait of a complex and energetic scholar who almost single handedly developed an uniquely American anthropology of Africans, on both sides of the Atlantic.

Over the course of his career, he emerged as a particularly powerful figure in both anthropology and area studies, and while he was always shrewd, he never hesitated to publicly challenge or undermine such powerful figures as Gunnar Myrdal, E. Franklin Frazier, W. E. B. Du Bois, Carter G. Woodson, and Dwight D. Eisenhower. Gershenhorn frames his powerful and lucid intellectual biography by identifying specific tensions and particular contradictions that arise from

Herskovits's "embrace of cultural relativism, his attack on racial an cultural hierarchy, and his conceptualization of Negro studies" (p. 9).

Meticulously researched, Gershenhorn develops a captivating narrative divided up into seven long but well executed chapters that document the major twists and turns within Herskovits's career. Focusing on the racial politics of knowledge, Gershenhorn provides more than a description of Herskovits's past, he gives the reader the tools, for example, to reconcile Johnnetta B. Cole's belief that "Herskovits had a special place in his heart for African American students," and St. Clair Drake's statement that he "never attempted to recruit and train Afro-Americans" (p.198). Above all, Gershenhorn provides answers and much needed context to better understand why the legacy of Herskovits remains so ambivalent within African American studies, ambiguous within anthropology, yet so well defined in African Studies.

From the beginning of his career to the end, Herskovits's research agenda was set and shaped by the funding he could secure. Gershenhorn is at his best when he describes the tug of war between the research Herksovits wanted to pursue and the research he was forced to produce for the National Research Council, the Social Science Research Council, and the Rockefeller and Carnegie foundations- -the major sources of his funds. For example, in 1923, Herskovits' first major research project was an assessment of "physical and psychological variability within a racially mixed population" of Negroes in Harlem. It was funded by the NRC, despite the fact he "never even took an anthropometry class at Columbia" (p. 29).

Gershenhorn's most valuable contribution to the study of the history of anthropology involves his careful and creative description of the complicated debate over black culture, and the role of so-called "African survivals." After Melville and Frances completed two trips to Surinam, he wrote a "major interpretive essay in which he argued that African cultural influence extended throughout the Americas" (p.77). This was the first in a series of books and articles that pitted the well-meaning cultural relativist against established sociologists like E. Franklin Frazier who "throughout his career . . . rejected the influence of African culture on American blacks" (p.101).

It also pitted him against funding agencies that consistently supported research which focused on U.S. race relations, not black people's culture. By following Herskovits's career, and the money that churned in its wake, one comes away with a stunning realization that both the foundations as well as AAA leadership made it clear that there was little interest in developing Negro anthropology in the Americas, while there was a compelling interest to develop anthropological research in Africa, especially in the context of the Cold War and the rise of area studies.

compact and efficient

This little book contains roughly two third of all the materials typically covered in a graduate level intro. complex analysis.
Unlike other typical American textbook on complex analysis, the author starts the book with elementary exposition of power series; so called Weierstrass's view point as the author calls it.

At first it seems that the author is slow at getting to the major point of the theory, namely Cauchy's integral formula, because he spends a fair amount of pages on power series. However, this little exposition in the beginning of the book actually makes the book very efficient; unlike the American counterparts, which presents the Cauchy's viewpoint first, then introduces the power series, creates an obstruction on the flow of the logical presentation of the subject.

This choice of arrangement of material makes the presentation of global and local version of Cauchy's formula very short and efficient. Also, its corollaries such as Laurent's series and residue theorem is also treated in very economical way without sacrificing any clarity.

After the treatment of the aforementioned basic/major theory rest of the book proceeds in almost same manner as the standard American texts; product development, Mobius transformation(automorphism groups of the simple domains), Riemann mapping theorem, normal families, harmonic functions, etc.

This book can be efficient and compact, because the author assumes that the readers are familiar with basic set topology(such as compactness, connectedness, topological group). Also curvilinear integration is treated in terms of differential forms, just as in Ahlfors' book. Since, differential form is not typically covered in standard American undergraduate courses, the reader who are not exposed to differential forms might be frustrated while using this book. Another possible obstruction when reading this book might be that you need some knowledge of summable families of a topological group; otherwise the reader won't completely understand all the materials on the power series.

As you can expect from the very small size of this book, many other interesting and important subject matters are missing in this wonderful book; such as Runge's theorem, Jensen's formula, Hadamard's factorization theorem, covering spaces, homology version of Cauchy's theory and branched covering associated with proper holomorphic maps, just to name a few.

So, it might not be wise to use this book as a replacement for a modern textbook on complex analysis. However, its efficient and extremely clear presentation on the basic material makes this book an indispensable reading for any math students IMHO.

my favorite intro to complex analysis

This is a masterful treatment of the subject, including power series, integration, the homotopy version of cauchy's theorem, residue calculus, differential equations, harmonic functions, and intro to riemann surfaces.

i confess i do not recognize the book i read from the first review here however, as mine begins with formal power series and has rather little on several complex variables. I have both the 1963 hardback and the recent dover reprint and they are identical, but i have not seen the french version.

It is sobering that after 2 years not one person has even reacted to this review. Are todays students totally clueless about what books to learn from? I have a phd in math and am an internationally known researcher in math. give yourself a break and give my suggestions a try. how much do you have to lose on a book of this price?

if you doubt me i would recall that this was the book of choice at harvard in 1965 by the great john torrance tate.

a translation of a classic

This elegant little book by Henri Cantan covers both complex functions on one and several variables, and in that way (by the inclusion of several variables) it differs and stands out from most other books on complex variables at the beginning US-graduate level. It is a translation of an original French language version. I can recommend both the original and the translation. It is readable, and the exercises are plenty and excellent. Thanks to Dover, the translation is now readily available and cheap.

Cartan's book starts with complex numbers, power series, and a review of the standard complex functions of one variable, e.g., the exponential, and the complex logarithm. Then follow holomorphic functions, Taylor and Laurent expansions, singularities, Cauchy's theorems, residues, analytic continuation, lots of examples, and beautifully illustrated. Included are also geometric topics, elementary complex geometry, Mobius transformations, automorphisms, transformation groups, differential forms, harmonic and analytic functions, Riemann surfaces, and infinite products, and a brief chapter on conformal mappings.

The book is divided pretty evenly between one and several variables, with the second half being several variables. However each part can be read pretty much independently of the other.

The book in its French edition was published first in the 1950ties, and the first English edition in 1963, and then starting 1995 reprinted by Dover. It is suitable as a text for a course or as a supplement in a standard beginning graduate course in complex function theory. While it contains the standard elements in such a course, we note that a systematic treatment of power series comes relatively late, in Chapter 10, beginning on page 195 (halfway into the book.) Some readers might want to begin with that.

Of other Dover titles on the same subject, but considerably more elementary we recommend the books by Fisher, Volkovyskii et al, Silverman, Schwerdtfeger, and Flanigan. These books however only cover the case of a single variable. Review by Palle Jorgensen, August 5, 2006.

I have this book, we used it in my high school psychology class. It is an informative and good book for beginners, and for first exposing one to the feild of psychology. It is just that, a "high school book." SO dont expect a bunch of information and guidence, but a sort of introduction to psychology.

Mr. Rajendar Menen is a journalist. The 50 mudras described are the same as in the book "Mudras" - Yoga in your hands by Gertrud Hirshi. Even the drawings are exactly the same - just with some added shadows here and there.
