Disappointing read

The book does not live up to its title - most of its information is theoretical and uses examples not relative to the person who would read this book - i.e. smaller business owners. It is a scholarly overview of the process but for a do-able, step by step approach, I found it highly inferior to John Gross's "Fundamentals of Maintenance" - just because it is written in more difficult language does not make it a better book. Gross pointed out, and I agree, that people talk ABOUT preventative maintenance and the benefits for your company, but no one tells you how to actually set up a department or actual procedures. This is that type of a book - all research and very little actual, personal experience. Bypass this one.

BEAR POND by Bruce Weber

Bruce Weber's BEAR POND is one of the best of the male-physique photography books. The black-and-white pix are excellent and sharply focused. Too bad it was not printed on slick paper. And too bad Weber didn't do any sequels, like BEAR POND II - I'm sure thousands of people like myself would have bought it! I bought my copy - first edition - for $50.00 - good investment! Weber should do more books - he must have hundreds of photos in his files.

A lot more to this series than meets the eye...

Ishida Sui's work is excellent. He is a master at foreshadowing, symbolism, character development, and world building. Every character has a story, and it's difficult to choose a side to root for. Each volume brings you tumbling down the disturbing rabbit hole after Kaneki. I can't wait to collect the whole manga in English! I can't recommend this series enough!!

Kaneki's Unusual Powers

With Tokyo Ghoul 2, we're introduced to the ghouls' main antagonists: the Doves. Among them, two are especially deadly and they've targeted the ghouls in Kaneki's ward. As he is forced to watch their deadly intent on a friend, Kaneki is fast making the decision in favor of the ghoul world over the human. He may not want to kill but he does want to protect.

Story: Kaneki makes friend with other ghouls in the coffee shop and meets several gentle souls as a result. But the ghoul enforcement squad has been operating heavily in Kaneki's ward - and soon they sniff out one of his friends - a mother of a young girl. At the same time, he is learning more about what it means to be a ghoul, including getting fitted for his first ghoul mask (to hide his face from identification by the ghoul squad). Kaneki has tried to eat real food to fit in - but it is becoming harder and harder. And there is still the concern for his human best friend, whose life would be forfeit if he knew Kaneki became a ghoul.

By the end of the chapter, we've pretty much figured out that Kaneki is going to be a special unique snowflake ghoul. Having inherited Rize's very strong powers and adding to him being human/ghoul hybrid, it should be interesting from here on out watching him power up to his potential. But at least at the very end of the volume, we got to see his trademark ghoul mask. Although a bit less on the horror, volume 2 continues its meditative discussions mixed with ultra violence. Reviewed from an advance reader copy provided by the publisher.

More lucid than most Lafferty stories

Short and sweet: The story itself is a short and engaging piece. It is remarkable that it was free. Lafferty is a little hard to come by.

The Kindle Version was well done without all the wonky formatting problems that many other free Kindle books have. I really enjoyed this and its free!

My first R.A. Lafferty experience

It's late and I'm tired so I'll be brief.

I had never heard of R.A. Lafferty's work until by chance, I read an old interview of Steely Dan's Donald Fagen. Anyone familiar with him knows he has a pension for being cryptic and satirically witty in interviews. Fagen didn't directly mention Lafferty by name, but mentioned using the Ktistek machine, a subject of Lafferty's book "Arrive At Easterwine." In my quest to find out what this "Ktistek" machine was, I found Lafferty.

Curious about Easterwine, I did some research. I found out that it was a very difficult read, requiring some to reread, just to get a grasp of the complex use of metaphor Lafferty uses in the book. Some readers gave up trying to understand it entirely! Not wanting to order and wait for a printed book, or diving into something that would require Cliff's Notes to understand, I decided to get my feet wet with this free eBook of Lafferty's, The Six Fingers of Time.

It was a most enjoyable short read, as I read it in about an hour (or one minute, if I possessed the power that protagonist Charles Vincent had)! Lafferty's descriptions of time slowed to a crawl were vivid and colorful, humorous and creepy. He definitely has a most unorthodox prose, unlike anyone I have ever read. You have to pay attention during dialog between characters. They can blur a bit, and the characters speak in a way that isn't particularly conversational. In such a short book, Lafferty creates a very deep landscape about the nature of time and eternity.

If you are unfamiliar with R.A. Lafferty, I would recommend getting this book. You can read it in the time it would take you to eat lunch. It's an easy read, and you can't beat the price!
